Session abstract:
In the post- pandemic era, intellectual property protection on data, privacy, etc. is getting more attention. At the same time, the protection on traditional IP issues, such as patent, trademark and copyright, have become more and more important. The speakers of our panel will focus on the topic “IP Protection in Various Jurisdictions in the Post-pandemic Era”, sharing their opinions from the perspective of their respective jurisdiction.

Yoshifumi Onodera
Yoshifumi Onodera is a partner at Mori Hamada & Matsumoto. He focuses on domestic and international dispute resolutions and licensing in relation to intellectual property as well as TMT matters. With his background in the fields of chemistry and biology, he has handled matters that require a high degree of technical expertise in various fields of technology.
Christopher Kao
Chris Kao is based in Pillsbury’s San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices, where he focuses on intellectual property and complex commercial litigation. Chris is also the co-leader of Pillsbury’s Taiwan practice.
Chris is an experienced first-chair trial lawyer representing technology companies in patent, copyright, trademark and trade secrets litigation, and other high-stakes commercial disputes. He has represented companies in the computer hardware and software, semiconductor, telecommunications, biotechnology, and consumer products industries in federal and state courts throughout the country, the U.S. International Trade Commission, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
He has extensive experience litigating Covered Business Method and inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Chris also regularly advises clients on privacy and cybersecurity issues and is designated a Certified International Privacy Professional/US by the IAPP.
Chris received his B.A. from Dartmouth College, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He is listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America (published by BL Rankings LLC) for Litigation – Intellectual Property, 2018-2021 and Litigation – Patent, 2021. He has also been elected to the Northern California Super Lawyers list, Super Lawyers (Thomson Reuters), 2016-2020.
Jose Eduardo Genilo
Mr. Genilo is a partner at the ACCRA Law Offices, Philippines. ACCRA Law is a full service law firm with departments specializing in corporate and special projects; litigation; immigration; tax; labor; and intellectual property, data & technology, among others.
He started and built his career primarily in IP, Data & Technology Law practice which has enabled him to confidently and effectively handle a vast range of work for clients.
He has rendered extensive and comprehensive work on patents from prior art searches, freedom to operate opinions, drafting of specification and claims, prosecuting patent applications, licensing and enforcement. Apart from his law degree, he is an engineering graduate and a qualified patent agent, being one of the top passers of the patent agent examination conducted by the Philippine IP Office in 2007; these have allowed him to work on patent matters with much ease and reliability.

Catherine Verneret
Catherine VERNERET, Partner, is specialized in trademark, patent design and copyright law. She also practices personal data protection law. Catherine has developed a solid experience in the distribution, telecommunication and perfume sectors. Her practice is split between transactional and contentious matters.
She has also been a lecturer for more than 20 years in the Professional Master Degree of Industrial Property at Paris II-Assas (European competition law) and since 2019 in the University Diploma on the GDPR at Paris Dauphine. She writes regularly in specialized Intellectual Property journals and, in particular, has written a leaflet of the Trademark “Jurisclasseur” on trademark infringement proceedings. She is also member of AIPPI and chairs the commission on copyright applied to the digital world. Joyce Zhang
Joyce Zhang specializes in providing professional legal services for multinational companies and foreign invested companies in PRC, with extensive experience in handling intellectual property, foreign direct investment, and international trade related legal issues in particular. She has represented many large and medium scale multinational companies and foreign invested companies in PRC, like Samsung subsidiaries and other US, UK and EU clients, with regard to foreign intellectual property direct investment, international trade, digital trade and commercial disputes.
